About Nilachal Hills
The Nilachal Hill or Kamagiri hill situated at Guwahati is of remarkable historical, archeological as well as spiritual importance. This hill believed to be a 'Khasi' sacrificial website earlier, now has a set of historical temples on the pinnacle; the in large part eminent of them is the Kamakhya temple. The temple of Goddess Shakti or Kamakhya is the oldest and most respected centre for Shakti worship leading to the spread of the Tantrik Hinduism sect.
It is assumed that woman genitalia of dead Sati fell down whilst her corpse became being carried through her husband Shiva turning the hill blue, therefore the call Neelachal. There is no picture of Shakti here. Within a nook of a cave within the temple, there is a sculptured photograph of the Yoni of the Goddess, that is the object of reverence. A natural spring maintains the stone wet. Other temples at the Neelachala hill include those of Tara, Bhairavi, Bhuvaneswari and Ghantakarna.
